With the Bijhouwer Prize, the NHBOS fund rewards a special and high-quality achievement in the field of landscape architecture. This award is presented once every three years at the Bijhouwer Event, thereby bringing landscape architecture to the attention of a wider audience. The prize includes 20,000 euros and receiving the winners cup for 3 years.<\/p>\n
The prize winner spends the amount on a project, activity or event that stimulates the development of the discipline.<\/p>\n
Prize winners can be individuals who have or have had a special significance for the profession, consultancy firms or companies that distinguish themselves through a special oeuvre, but also services or departments of government organisations that have fulfilled their responsibility for the quality of the landscape or urban outdoor space at a high level.<\/p>\n
During the Bijhouwer Event, the Bijhouwer Prize is presented, the Bijhouwer Lecture is delivered, and the projects of the 3 talent grants will be presented.<\/p>\n
\n\t\t\tWho was Jan Bijhouwer?\t<\/h4>\n\t
J.P.Th. (Jan) Bijhouwer (1898-1974) was de eerste hoogleraar Landschapsarchitectuur aan de toenmalige Landbouwhogeschool in Wageningen, en was later ook hoogleraar aan de toenmalige Technische Hoogeschool Delft. Jan Bijhouwer werkte na zijn HBS bij verschillende kwekerijen waarna hij in 1916 aan de universiteit van Wageningen de studie tuinbouw volgde. Hij werkte vanaf 1927 enige tijd als onderzoeker en instructeur tuinontwerp in de VS, waar hij ge\u00efnspireerd raakte door het vakgebied landschapsarchitectuur, de modernisering van de samenleving en de parken binnen en buiten de steden. Hij keerde in 1929 terug naar Nederland. Bijhouwer kreeg, nadat hij in contact was gekomen met stedenbouwkundigen en na zijn ervaringen in de VS, steeds meer belangstelling voor de verstedelijking van het landschap en voor de specifieke aspecten van de moderne samenleving die het landschap sterk veranderden, zoals autogebruik, suburbanisatie en massarecreatie. In zijn ontwerpen voor het landschap zocht hij naar een nieuwe balans tussen stad en land en tussen natuur en landbouw. Zo was hij een van de eersten die pleitten voor ‘ontspanningslandschappen’. Naast zijn hoogleraarschap in Wageningen (1946-1966) werd hij vanaf 1957 ook hoogleraar in de landschapskunst aan de Technische Universiteit Delft.<\/p>\n
